How to Become an Enrolled Agent?

To become an Enrolled Agent (EA), you must pass the three-part Special Enrollment Exam (SEE), which assesses your expertise in tax law and procedures, covering 1) Individual Taxation, 2) Business Taxation, and 3) Representation, Practices, and Procedures. You need to pass all three sections to obtain your license.
  1. Obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN): Ensure your PTIN is current if you already have one; if not, apply online via the IRS Tax Professional PTIN System using your Social Security number, and pay a non-refundable fee of $19.75.
  2. Prepare for the Special Enrollment Exam (SEE): Enroll in EA Exam Preparation classes, which provide a thorough review of tax laws and procedures for each exam part, led by experienced Enrolled Agents to help you pass.
  3. Schedule Your SEE Exam: The exam, administered by Prometric, is available from May 1 to February 28 annually; schedule your three test dates, pay a non-refundable, non-transferable fee of $267 per part, and visit the nearest testing center, ensuring all parts are passed within two years.
  4. Apply for EA Enrollment: Once you’ve passed all three SEE parts, apply online at pay.gov, submit Form 23, and pay a non-refundable $140 application fee.
  5. Pass a Suitability Check: After applying, the IRS will verify that your tax returns are filed, any outstanding taxes are paid, and conduct a background check for criminal records.
